impressive week with the announcement of publishing agreements with two highly acclaimed video game producers at the company's annual studio showcase Thursday. Even though details of the projects weren't disclosed, reputation of the two companies, Epic Games and Grasshopper Manufacture, was enough to elicit "oooo's and aww's" out of attendees at the event. Epic is best known for its game "Gears of War," which has sold 5 million copies worldwide. The sequel is scheduled to release on Nov. 7. Grasshopper Manufacture is a Tokyo-based company that has shipped 11 titles to date, and is best known for its 2007 title, "No More Heroes." The news came just days after EA released its best selling title raceing game "Madden"‚'09." The Agency Game company is also in the works of trying to acquire Take Two Publishing, which published "Grand Theft Auto." "Overall EA is actually in great shape," said analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan. "They've been doing a lot of things right game show auditions that make a lot of sense." At $15.38 billion in market capitlization, EA is currently the largest manufacturer of video game software. Because of this enormous size, smaller companies often gravitate towards a company like EA because it can market and distribute it at a level that is more difficult for some smaller companies. The idea is that EA can focus on the publishing, while the developers can work on making Advertisement the games. Why the Wii is well-suited to video game violence | Negative Approach - CNET News Home News Negative Approach Negative Approach August 15, 2008 10:19 AM PDT Why the play game Wii is well-suited to video game violence Posted by Dave Rosenberg Share Digg Del.icio.us Reddit Facebook Email Print I wrote recently about the need for violent video games on the Nintendo Wii and, for clarity, the main point of my message is that the Wii is a great platform for a game that has physical interaction. It could be where you can pull a street sign from the ground and shove it into your enemy's head, or it could be a cooking game where you have to assemble a Gordon Ramsay-esque 10-course meal. The point is, the Wii has unique features that are well suited to violent games. As to whether or not game developers will make violent games for the Wii and if they will be big sellers is not my area of expertise. It's the underlying possibilities of the technology that I find interesting. Violent video games on the Wii address two specific points: 1. Nintendo wants to sell more Wiis and games. Hardcore gamers are not buying Wiis        a. I could make a couch-jockey/carpal tunnel joke, but the Wii doesn't have the graphics horsepower of other consoles or PCs. What it does have is the ability to use more than your thumbs to play a game. 2. The Wii brings a whole new level of human/game interaction that would game trailers previews be well suited to more adult/violent games        a. Wii baseball has a batting game. I'm not suggesting this is the same social context as hitting some in-game enemy in the head, but I am saying it's pretty fun to hit stuff.        b. We all need more exercise I figure if you can do one thing (hit a baseball) then you can do more things (hit an in-game enemy in the head). How that cookin game online gets manifested into the game is a whole different story. The comments and arguments around my previous free family feud game post (in which I assert violent video games are cool) remind me of the Simpsons episode when Marge campaigns against Itchy and Scratchy. I don't know if video game violence has an effect on children, and I'm not sure if I care. I write about software disruption, not social issues. You can garotte people, throw them over a ledge, bang their heads against a hard surface, strangle them... pretty violent and pretty physical. Pretty fun. Reply to this comment by asozasis August 16, 2008 2:20 AM PDT Mr Rosenberg is not a moron. He is ignorant, ill-informed, unfeeling, neanderthalic, misanthropic and so narrow-minded he is almost certainly suffering from Asperger's Syndrome. He should never have children and, if he already has spawned, they should be removed from his influence immediately. No, he is not a moron, and he should use his considerable powers to identify more useful ways to contribute to the society that has done so well by him. Reply to this comment by wedding-planning August 16, 2008 5:12 PM PDT Actually, the Wii is not nearly as narnia game cheats suited to those kinds of games. Those games are generally high graphic games, involve considerably more processing power, and are not conducive to animation or 'cartoony' looking characters. hemroids Reply to this comment by Chill05 August 17, 2008 9:25 PM PDT 'No More Heroes' features gameplay where u hit a baseball to knock out goons. My point: it's been done, and there will probably be more. The Wii is, arguably, just getting started. Reply to this comment by Select-Foam September 7, 2008 9:28 PM PDT I don't think that those types of games are great for the WII, it features a much more inhibited processing core which is not capable of the fast speeds and rendering that the PS3 is capable of - Jeremy - memory foam mattresses Reply to this friendly game comment Add a comment Comment SUBMIT Why the Wii is well-suited to video game violence Click here to add another comment.
