MERCIAN SOCIALIST VOICE
ISSUE ONE, AUGUST 2003 ONLINE EDITION
A NEW FORCE HAS RISEN FOR THE WORKING CLASS OF MERCIA
In response to the rise of the Scottish Socialist Party, the possibility of a Welsh Socialist Party, and Socialist MSP (member of the Scottish assembly, not Mercian Socialist Party) Tommy Sheridans call for the "English" left to pull together, the Mercian Socialist Party has been formed.
For too long Mercian interests in the Socialist movement have been driven by old men in London. In the last few years we have seen the 'Socialist Alliance' rise and fall. The Socialist Labour Party lead by typical Yorkist Arthur Scargill. While in our cities of Liverpool, Coventry and Preston, Socialists have been forced to follow the whims of neo-unionist, and so-called socialists from London.
Mercian Socialists must break from the London in order to continue the national struggle for Independence from our false unity with "England".
FOUNDING MEETING DISCUSSES PERSPECTIVES
Socialists from various traditions have now joined the Mercian Socialist Party. The opening national meeting discussed the politics and perspectives for the new party.
It was voted that for the time being we issue the MSV as a monthly. The name Mercian Socialist Voice was inspired by the example set by the Scottish Socialist Party, and their fine newspaper 'Scottish Socialist Voice'. It was voted that the MSV would cover a wide range of topics and be as inclusive as possible of the wider range of views within the party.
The possible future Mercian assembly was also an issue discussed by the national meeting. Some in the party suggested we should fully participate in this assembly, and take our full responsibility as MMPs. Others argued that any Mercian Parliament should only be a secondary activity, to our extra-parliamentary action. A minority called for a boycott of any future Mercian parliament. These issues have not been resolved, but will be examined in full at our first national congress slated for next year.
The MSP as this goes to press has formed Branches all over Mercia. We urge the formation of more local branches. It is hoped that we will be able to set up over 100 branches by the National congress slated for next year. Contact the Mercian Socialist Party for details of your local branch.
Like the SSP, we have welcomed the formation of platforms. No distinct platforms have yet been formed. But we anticipate with the arrival of Socialists moving away from their London-centric tendencies, there will be the formation of Platforms. We believe these platforms will add to the party provided that they are not building themselves at the expense of the MSP. The admission and conduct of platforms will be discussed at the founding Congress.
WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT OUR PARTY
The MSP has been hailed in the republic of Ireland as:
"a very genuine and sincere group and should be supported fully in their fight for national independence".
Some others are not so enthusiastic:
"Just wondering which section of the Empire loyalists is pissed off enough by the SSP to be bothered to do this.
Why oh why the SWP and CWI just don't get together I don't know".
The MSV reply is that we are trying to follow the example of the SSP. It is the MSP which will provide a forum for the above mentioned organisations to "get together".
The Coventry Socialist Party have also provided a response to the MSP project:
Their response was mainly negative.
No Thanks, we want undemocratic rule from Tamworth just as little as we want undemocratic centralist rule from London. The gold cross is a double cross comrade!
Let us not forget that the so called "Kingdom of Mercia"
considered itself the overlord of London Kent and wessex and Northumbria. We want no truck with a "Nation of Mercia" based on oppression!
In any case, what are it's demands, Restoration of the Tithes but without Squires? Re-instatement of the Gold Dinar without compensation to the city of London? Freedom of Paganism?
What else are you going to call for, re-introduction of the cottage industry system?
free cholera and diptheria for all? a crash programme of open sewers to restore the regions heritage?
Besides I don't want to have to get a visa to get beyond Staffordshire or have to run the gauntlet of heavily armed welsh border police to cross from salop into wales.
Anyway, where does this all stop, you will be calling for the division of Coventry into "Separate diverse republics next" Aren't the council doing this already with the near total yuppiefication of the city centre. Soon you'll need a passport to cross into the land of big tin wings and £250.000 bedsits.
Think we'll stick to internationalism, anyway our HQ is in London but our leader is a scouser and our industrial organiser's from the Black country so we've enough checks and balances.
Anyway good luck
"You lot (probably just one of you) clearly have too much time on your hands"
We do not have enough time on out hands in fact, the MSP is busilly building the forces of Socialism in Mercia.
"Do more than 0.0001% of the Mercian population regard Mercia as a nation?
There's even a case for rejecting a "Lesser Mercia" (West Midlands). Language. The common people of Coventry speak with a clearly different accent to the common people of Birmingham.
Compare to London. Although cockney does vary across what was the old Greater London area, these differences are not large.
Notice that even English, Scottish and Irish identities were only notions for the ruling classes 2-3 hundred years ago. Since that time they have dribbled down the social ladder.
As for Mercia - that was just something for the king of Mercia and his nobles (aka Warlord and gang members). Most of us were just peasants in our villages - 50 miles away might as well as been Afghanistan."
Although the response from the most successful socialists in Mercia has been overwhelmingly negative, we urge them to rethink. They are fully welcome to join the party at any time. We hope that they can break the link with London and come over and build the forces for an independent Mercian republic.
THE MERCIAN NATIONALIST PARTY AND OUR RELATIONS WITH IT.

Thank you for letting us know about your movement. I have informally mentioned your request to fellow members of the National Executive Committee. Could you send us a short history of your party? We do feel very strongly about elimination of duplication where possible.
