Dave Stewart also recorded Maria performing the track solo on the piano as a country ballad.
Trivia: Feargal Sharkey's cover was a #1 hit in the UK for 2 weeks in November 1985. 
Owing to the song's popularity in the UK Maria started to perform it herself at live shows in the early 1990s and resurrected it again for her 2006 Peddlin' Dreams Alone tour. She finally recorded a studio version herself in 2006 which was released as a single in April 2007.

In an interview Steve Earle gave the main credit to Maria for the lyrics - certainly there does seem to be a lyrical affinity between this song and other Maria songs from the same era, namely Panic Beach and The Silver Age.
