Lentula is an ancient village situated in a valley at the foot of the Apennines Mounts in Tuscany, not far from the Emilia-Romagna border.

The origins of Lentula date back to Roman times, when, in the year 72 B.C., the consul Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus (*), was sent to this valley by the Roman Senate to fight against Spartacus the gladiator and his companions. A ramification of the ancient roman road "Cassia", probably passed through this area and Catilina may have travelled this road in 62 B.C. In Rome there is a road dedicated to this important Roman Dynasty of Consuls: "Via dei Lentuli". Even today there are three families in Rome with the same name (Lentulo); in Florence too, but in the latin form: (de) Lentulus.

During the Xth century in the nearby villages Fossato e Torri, towers and castles were built as protection from Hungarians and other potential invaders. About 100 years later they was restored and their properly passed in the hands of Countess Matilde of Canossa. It is possible to see their remains on which Catholic churches were built later. During the age of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (1570-1860) was situated in Lentula.

At present, during summer, the river that flows through Lentula turns into a natural swimming pool where people come to swim and get tanned. In Lentula there are two restaurants which serve authentic regional food. In the same building which once housed the custom is one restaurant located (Tel. 0039 0573 898090). Nearby is the source and bottling plant of the Lentula mineral water and a small new hotel with Youth Hostel "Il Palazzo" (Tel. 0039 0573 898032).

To get Lentula from Pistoia by car: Via Antonelli, Candeglia, Valdibure (Pistoia-Riola road, SP 24), Acquerino, Monachino, and Lentula (27 km from Pistoia). There is also a coach leaving Pistoia every day at 2 p.m. (except Sunday), from S. Francesco Square or from the Station Square (Piazza della Stazione). From the Nord (Milano, Bologna) follow the map.
